25-story waterfront condominium tower

The Bristol

East Operation

Located in West Palm Beach, Fla., the design for The Bristol was inspired by the image of a yacht sailing along the water and its ensuing wake. An undulating floor-to-ceiling glass façade and deep curving balconies evoke images of waves on the water. The 25-story tower features high-end condominium units with waterfront views and served by private elevators. Building amenities include a two-level lobby, salon and card room, fitness center with spas, and a pool and sun deck.

The project broke ground May 2016, with Ceco providing full concrete frame services. Formwork systems used were Ceco’s own Speed Deck for podium levels, trusses for typical floors and CEFCO shoring towers for the tower’s higher levels.

The scope of work included supplying cranes and supplying and installing 46,000 cubic yards of concrete, 3,500 tons of reinforcing steel, 632,000 pounds of post-tensioning cable and more than 10,000 embeds for the building’s glass railing system. Ceco also provided design assistance during preconstruction, helping to design the 10,000-plus railing embeds to minimize conflicts with reinforcement in the tower’s post-tensioned flat plate structural system.

The project required a high level of coordination among team members to ensure the thousands of glass and railing embeds met tight location tolerances. Additional challenges included construction of a basement—unusual for Florida structures so close to the ocean water—and balconies protruding as much as 13 feet beyond, which necessitated thickening the perimeter slabs to 10 inches thick. The high-strength vertical concrete that was specified for the tower resulted in the pouring team using three different concrete mixes for slab pours (due to the need to puddle per ACI concrete design and placement requirements).

The tower was completed by general contractor Suffolk Construction May 2020, with condominium unit prices starting at $5 million.
